HOW IT ALL BEGAN
History of Pole Vaulting
Pole vaulting began with ancient Greeks and Cretans who vaulted over bulls to avoid confrontation. It made its way over to Northern Europe in the mid 1800s, originally intended for vaulting over canals. The first competition where athletes vaulted for height was in Germany in the 1850s. Poles were made of bamboo, then aluminum, now fiberglass and carbon fiber. By 1896, men’s pole vaulting was added to the Olympics. Women’s pole vaulting was added to the Olympics in 2000.
